Titans’ cornerback depth reduced with loss of Harris

NASHVILLE — The Tennessee Titans suffered their first significant injury of the offseason on Tuesday during an OTA practice.

Cornerback Brandon Harris, who re-signed with the Titans after being claimed off waivers in 2014, was lost for the season after tearing his ACL and meniscus while breaking up a pass play.

One of the things that might have played a factor in the injury is that the Titans shifted their practice indoors to their bubble either for fear of rain or because of wet fields from rain the previous two days in the Nashville area.

Harris, who was expected to be one of the Titans’ veteran backup cornerbacks, will instead have surgery soon and will have to spend his entire 2015 season rehabbing the injury. The veteran cornerback was on a one-year contract for the league minimum of $745,000.

The Titans are already down one cornerback in the short term as Blidi Wreh-Wilson, who started last season, underwent shoulder surgery and still has not done anything more than individual work this offseason. The Titans are hopeful that Wreh-Wilson will be ready in time for training camp, though they signed Perrish Cox to start opposite Jason McCourty.

Harris’ injury means that beyond Cox, McCourty and nickel back Coty Sensabaugh, there is precious little veteran depth on the outside in the secondary.

It also means that inexperienced players like Jemea Thomas and undrafted rookies Cody Riggs and Curtis Riley move up a notch in the pecking order as the Titans look for a fifth or sixth cornerback for their secondary and special teams (presuming Wreh-Wilson is back and healthy enough to begin camp and preseason).
