Quarterback Danny Etling will transfer from Purdue after the school released him from his scholarship on Thursday.

Etling, a junior, was the starter at the beginning of last season but lost the job to Austin Appleby in early October.

Appleby started the final seven games, including Purdue’s first Big Ten win under coach Darrell Hazell, and is again expected to be the starter this season after competing with Etling and freshman David Blough during the spring.

There was no immediate indication where Etling plans to transfer. If he goes to another FBS school, he would be required to sit out the 2015 season per NCAA rules but have two years of eligibility remaining.

“We appreciate all the hard work and dedication that Danny has put into the Purdue program,” Hazell said. “We wish him nothing but the best in his future both on and off the football field.”

Etling played in 13 games for the Boilermakers the past two years and passed for 2,490 yards and 16 touchdowns with 12 interceptions.

As a true freshman in 2013, Etling started the final seven games and passed for 1,610 yards and 10 touchdowns with seven interceptions.
