Ohio State player notes for Feb 21st, 2019

*Dwayne Haskins Jr. – Noteworthy
Some NFL analysts believe the Giants could draft Ohio State quarterback Dwayne Haskins with the No. 6 pick in the NFL Draft, but general manager Dave Gettleman could pass on a first-round quarterback for the second consecutive year. “Haskins has the most upside of the top quarterbacks”, an NFL scout told NJ Advance Media Tuesday, on the condition of anonymity so he could speak freely on the top prospects. “But I don’t think he’s the best fit for the Giants.” While the Giants could be on the lookout for a quarterback to replace 38-year-old Eli Manning, Haskins” upside might not be enough to convince Gettleman to pull the trigger on a quarterback one year after taking running back Saquon Barkley No. 2 overall.

The scout believes that the Giants will look to fill a more immediate need for the 2019 roster in the first round, and punt the quarterback decision until later. “It all depends on whether they think there is an offensive lineman who holds more value still on the board,” the scout explained. “Then, they can get a guy like Tyree Jackson from Buffalo later on, or they could consider Daniel Jones from Duke. Both of those guys have upside, both have multiple years of starting experience, but both will most likely need to sit a year.” – NJ.com

*Dwayne Haskins Jr. – Noteworthy
The Big Ten hasn’t had a first-round NFL draft pick at quarterback since Penn State’s Kerry Collins in 1995. This is not to say Big Ten quarterbacks haven’t found NFL success, as Drew Brees (Purdue) and Russell Wilson (Wisconsin) have dominated for many years. Tom Brady’s career arc exists on a different plane than nearly any other pro QB. The draft, and how it judges prospects, is just a different sort of animal. That changes in 2019 as Ohio State’s Dwayne Haskins will be one of the first quarterbacks selected April 25. Haskins produced record-breaking numbers for Ohio State as he threw for 4,831 yards and 50 touchdowns. Both were Big Ten records, along with his record number of completions. Haskins had a dominant year. But dominant years don’t make elite draft prospects alone. – Cleveland.com
