Elijhaa Penny – Noteworthy – Transaction
RB Elijhaa Penny was signed by the Giants from the Cardinals practice squad Wednesday (Sept. 19). Penny, who recently converted from running back to fullback, played all 16 of his career games last season in Arizona. He rushed 31 times for 124 yards and two touchdowns, including eight carries for 24 yards and two first downs against the Giants in Week 16. Penny also had four receptions for 38 yards on the year and added 11 tackles on special teams, the fifth-most by a running back in the NFL. Originally signed as an undrafted rookie in 2016, Penny spent the entire year on the Cardinals’ practice squad before making the active roster in 2017. He re-signed on a one-year tender in April but was released during roster cuts on Sept. 1, landing back on the practice squad the following day.
Jon Halapio – Important – Injury – Transaction
C Jon Halapio (broken ankle) was placed on reserve/injured by the Giants Wednesday (Sept. 19). While he is eligible to be designated for return and begin practicing after missing at least six weeks and can play after eight weeks, the injury is expected to keep him out for the rest of the season. The team’s starting center suffered fractures to his lower leg and ankle in the third quarter of the Sunday night game in Dallas. Halapio underwent surgery on Monday to repair the injuries.
Stacy Coley – Noteworthy – Transaction
DT Stacy Coley was claimed on waivers from the Vikings Wednesday (Sept. 19) by the Giants after being waived Tuesday. Originally the first pick in the seventh round of the 2017 NFL Draft, the 6-foot, 195-pound Coley has played in six regular-season games — four as a rookie and the first two of the 2018 season. He also appeared in the Vikings’ NFC Championship Game against the eventual Super Bowl LII champion Philadelphia Eagles. Shurmur was the offensive coordinator in Minnesota at the time.
Coley (pronounced Cole-EE), who has not caught a pass in his NFL career, played primarily on special teams for the Vikings as a return specialist. He has two fair catches on punts, and one kickoff return for 19 yards. Coley was waived by the Vikings on Tuesday when they signed veteran kicker Dan Bailey.
