Arizona State player notes for Feb 21st, 2019

Tyler Whiley – Noteworthy
Defensive back Tyler Whiley was perhaps ASU’s most impressive player last season before sustaining a broken leg and ligament damage in August, causing him to miss the entire season. Well, the 6-foot, 217-pounder will get a chance to make up for lost time as he was granted a sixth year of eligibility by the NCAA. The school was informed of that development Wednesday by the NCAA but school officials had reason to be confident that would indeed be the case. Whiley, out of Scottsdale Chaparral High School, has been working his way back from the injury and participated in full in 11-on-11 drills for the first time earlier this week and had already played some in the seven-on-seven drills. Whiley redshirted his true freshman year, then played three seasons before he was injured prior to the start of the 2018 season. He is benefiting from a rule that went into effect last year that provides relief from the five-year eligibility rule if an institutional decision is made to redshirt a student-athlete in his freshman season and a later season is missed because of an injury. – Arizona Republic
