GAME BREAKDOWN
KEY MATCHUP: The Kansas State secondary played without S Denzel Goolsby, a key leader who sat out the UTSA win with an injury. The Wildcats need to be at full strength in the back end to contend with West Virginia QB Will Grier, who rates as the top Heisman Trophy hopeful in the Big 12. Just as critical as coverage will be the Wildcats’ ability to apply pressure on the elusive Grier. Kansas State has just two sacks and DE Reggie Walker has been disappointing so far. DE Wyatt Hubert is a freshman to watch. Grier ranks fifth or better nationally as a passer in efficiency (229.4), yards (380.5), touchdowns (nine) and completion percentage (.767). The Kansas State defense ranks 102nd nationally, allowing 436 yards per game.
DRAFT SLANT
–WR Isaiah Zuber showed flashes each of the past two seasons but as a junior he has emerged as the Wildcats’ go-to receiver who is also capable of busting big returns on both punts and kickoffs. Zuber was hugely responsible for a comeback win over South Dakota in the season opener and also starred in the UTSA win on Sept. 15. Will he be noticed by pro scouts? Not unless he continues to produce in multiple capacities, though Zuber is definitely the Wildcats’ top breakaway threat.
ROSTER REPORT
–S Denzel Goolsby missed the UTSA win with an undisclosed injury, which coach Bill Snyder anticipated would keep the junior sidelined indefinitely. He was replaced by Eli Walker, who was in on five tackles, including one for loss, and was impressive covering ground and also showing off some physicality.
–LB Elijah Sullivan, who battled injuries throughout preseason camp, remained out against UTSA but is expected to be available for the game at West Virginia.
–CB Kevion McGee, a backup who broke up a game-high four passes in the season-opening win against South Dakota, also missed the UTSA win with an undisclosed injury.
–Offensive coordinator Andre Coleman moved down to the field for the UTSA game after spending the first two games in the press box. Quarterbacks coach Collin Klein traded spots with Coleman in a move to facilitate communication.
