The New York Jets placed Greg Zuerlein on injured reserve and signed fellow kickers Riley Patterson and Spencer Shrader to the practice squad on Wednesday.
Either Patterson or Shrader will play for the Jets (2-6) on Thursday against the visiting Houston Texans (6-2). Both kickers worked out for the team on Tuesday.
Zuerlein, 36, is nursing a left knee injury. He has made just 9 of 15 field-goal attempts — with a long of 40 yards — and 13 of 14 extra-point tries this season.
Patterson, 25, made 59 of 67 field-goal attempts and 93 of 97 PATs in 39 career games with the Detroit Lions, Jacksonville Jaguars and Cleveland Browns since entering the league in 2021.
An undrafted rookie out of Notre Dame, Shrader, 25, made all three of his extra-point attempts while kicking in one game for the Indianapolis Colts this season.
New York also ruled out five-time Pro Bowl linebacker C.J. Mosley (neck) out of Thursday’s game. Mosley was injured in pregame warmups before Sunday’s loss to the New England Patriots.
Others who will sit against the Texans are receiver Allen Lazard (chest), guard Alijah Vera-Tucker (ankle), defensive lineman Leki Fotu (knee) and safeties Tony Adams (hamstring) and Ashtyn Davis (concussion).
Also on Wednesday, the Jets signed linebacker Marcelino McCrary-Ball to the active roster and released safety Jaylen Key from the practice squad.
McCrary-Ball, 25, has one tackle in three games with the Jets this season. Key, 24, has signed and been waived by the Jets on three occasions. He had yet to appear in a regular-season game, however.
