The Oakland Raiders named rookie Derek Carr their starting quarterback, Fox Sports reported Monday.
Carr beat out veteran Matt Schaub, who was expected to be the starter after being acquired in the offseason. Schaub spent the past seven seasons starting for the Houston Texans.
Head coach Dennis Allen needed to determine the extent of Schaub’s right elbow injury before picking his starter. It’s unclear yet whether that injury affected Allen’s choice.
Carr, who was taken early in the second round of this year NFL Draft, had a strong performance in the preseason, particularly when he threw three touchdown passes in a victory over the Super Bowl champion Seattle Seahawks.
