Jaguars chase missing ingredient: ‘consistency’

Details and consistency are killing the Jacksonville Jaguars from the under-the-helmet vantage point of quarterback Trevor Lawrence.

“Everyone being more consistent, including myself,” Lawrence said Wednesday afternoon in London.

Jacksonville is the “home” team this week against the New England Patriots (1-5) as it completes a two-game stand in England following a 35-16 loss to the Chicago Bears last week.

The Jaguars went 1-5 down the stretch in 2023 to fall out of playoff contention and started 2024 with the same record. The lone win was a 37-34 shootout with the Indianapolis Colts on Oct. 6.

“Quite honesty, the past couple years, when we haven’t played well — just the inconsistency from me or anyone at any given moment. You’re never going to be perfect, but just doing your job,” Lawrence said.

With the team’s first interception of the season last week, Jacksonville has only three total takeaways while allowing 21 touchdowns. They have seven total giveaways, which Lawrence believes is what truly ails the Jaguars.

“Taking care of the ball. Try to have a turnover-free game on Sunday. That’s the biggest part of this game, taking care of the ball,” Lawrence said. “That’s the biggest indication of winning or losing. How many turnovers you have, how many (takeaways) you’ve got as a defense. Those things go hand-in-hand. We’ve got to [be] better with it as an offense.”
