Left-handed reliever Bill Bray announced his retirement from baseball on Sunday night.
Bray, a veteran of six major-league seasons, had hoped to continue his career but faces labrum surgery after suffering another shoulder injury.
“Hard for me to believe as I type this, but I am officially retiring from professional baseball. #MLB,” Bray tweeted.
“I’ve injured my shoulder for a second time and will need surgery to repair a tear in my labrum. Made the decision a little easier.”
Injuries limited Bray to 4 1/3 innings with the Washington Nationals’ double-A Harrisburg affiliate last year and to 8 2/3 innings with the Cincinnati Reds in 2012.
The 30-year-old Bray leaves the game with 13-12 career record, three saves and a 3.74 ERA in 197 1/3 innings. In his last full season in the majors, Bray posted a 5-3 record with a 2.98 ERA in 79 games out of the bullpen for the Reds.
