Cincinnati Reds right-hander Homer Bailey has been diagnosed with a torn ulnar collateral ligament in his right elbow and will undergo Tommy John surgery, the team announced Friday.
The team said Bailey is expected to return during the 2016 season.
“After consulting with (team medical director) Dr. (Tim) Kremchek and other orthopedic surgeons, we determined the best option with the most predictable outcome is to surgically repair the ligament,” Reds general manager Walt Jocketty said. “It does not appear the injury is at all related to the right elbow flexor mass injury Homer sustained late last season.”
Kremchek will perform the surgery next Friday at Beacon Orthopaedics in Cincinnati.
Bailey, who turns 29 on Sunday, has made just two starts this season after undergoing flexor tendon surgery in September. He was 0-1 with a 5.56 ERA in 11 1/3 innings before going on the disabled list last week, retroactive to April 24.
