New York Yankees shortstop Troy Tulowitzki exited Wednesday’s game against the visiting Detroit Tigers after the third inning with a strained left calf, the team announced.
Tulowitzki popped out in his first at-bat in the second inning and exited one inning later as second baseman Gleyber Torres moved to shortstop to replace Tulowitzki. The Yankees said he was being taken to nearby New York Presbyterian Hospital for further tests.
Signed to a one-year free-agent contract in January following a workout for teams, Tulowitzki is 2-for-11 on the young season with a home run.
Tulowitzki, 34, missed all of last season and the final two months of the 2017 season with a heel injury while with the Toronto Blue Jays. Before appearing in New York’s Opening Day lineup, he had not played in a game since July 28, 2017.
The five-time All-Star shortstop was signed by the Yankees to fill the void left by Didi Gregorius, who had Tommy John surgery on his throwing shoulder in October. He is expected to be out until the June or July.
Despite being only six games into the 2019 season, the Yankees have already dealt with plenty of injuries. Veteran southpaw starting pitcher CC Sabathia was placed on the 10-day injured reserve list as he recovers from heart and knee procedures this offseason. He just finished serving a five-game suspension for throwing at a Tampa Bay Rays batter in September.
Other injured Yankees include outfielders Giancarlo Stanton (biceps strain) and Aaron Hicks (back), third baseman Miguel Andujar (shoulder), starting pitcher Luis Severino (shoulder) and reliever Dellin Betances (shoulder).
