New York Yankees catcher Robinson Chirinos was diagnosed with a fractured right wrist on Thursday, one day after being hit by a pitch in an exhibition game.
The severity was determined after Chirinos underwent X-rays and a CT scan. The Yankees said wrist and hand specialists will be consulted to see if the 36-year-old needs to undergo surgery.
Chrinos, who signed a minor league deal with the Yankees last month, was hit by Pittsburgh Pirates pitcher Blake Cederlind in the eighth inning of Wednesday’s game. He was competing for a backup role.
“It’s been awesome having Robinson in here,” Yankees manager Aaron Boone said. “He’s been a great teammate. He’s really influenced the catching room. He’s been a lot of fun for me to be around. Just a really good guy. I’m especially hurting for him today, just knowing how much he’s put in to be a part of this team.”
Gary Sanchez is New York’s starting catcher with Kyle Higashioka serving as the backup.
Chirinos batted just .162 with one homer and seven RBIs in 26 games with the Texas Rangers and Mets last season.
He has a .231 career average with 86 homers and 269 RBIs in 602 games with the Tampa Bay Rays (2011), Rangers (2013-18, 2020), Houston Astros (2019) and Mets (2020).
