White Sox set debut date for P Cease

The Chicago White Sox will promote pitching prospect Dylan Cease to make his major league debut Wednesday in Game 1 of a doubleheader against the visiting Detroit Tigers.

Cease, rated the No. 18 prospect in the majors according to MLB.com, will stay in the rotation after his call-up, manager Rick Renteria told reporters Sunday.

Cease, 23, was off to a fast start this season in his first experience at Triple-A before allowing 13 earned runs in 12 1/3 innings in his past four starts. Still, the White Sox have deemed him ready with a 5-2 record and 4.48 ERA in 15 starts at Charlotte. He has struck out 73 and walked 32 in 68 1/3 innings.

The White Sox acquired Cease and outfielder Eloy Jimenez, among others, from the crosstown rival Cubs in July 2017 in exchange for left-hander Jose Quintana. Jimenez, 22, made his major league debut this season and was hitting .251 with 14 home runs in 56 games entering Sunday’s action.

Cease, known for his fastball/curveball combination, saw his stock rise further last season, when he was 12-2 with a 2.40 ERA, striking out 160 in 124 innings at High-A Winston-Salem and Double-A Birmingham.
