Adam Engel, who was the Chicago White Sox’s everyday center fielder last season, was optioned back to Triple-A Charlotte on Sunday after a slow start to the season.
The White Sox also sent Caleb Frare back to Charlotte after the left-hander had been recalled before Sunday’s 9-2 defeat to the Boston Red Sox.
Engel is batting just .212 with one home run and four RBIs over 26 games this season. Engel had started 14 games in center field this season, including three consecutive before Sunday. But Leury Garcia got the start in center field for the series final against the Red Sox.
Engel batted .235 with a .279 on-base percentage last season, but had been valued for his speed and defensive abilities in center field.
Frare, who appeared in Sunday’s game but did not record an out, has five appearances with the White Sox this season, posting a 10.13 ERA.
The White Sox are expected to announce corresponding roster moves before Monday’s game at Cleveland.
