The Chicago White Sox released outfielder Nicky Delmonico on Monday less than two weeks after he underwent season-ending surgery to repair a torn labrum in his left shoulder.
The White Sox needed a spot on their 40-man roster when they selected the contract of right-hander Odrisamer Despaigne from Triple-A Charlotte to start Monday against the Washington Nationals.
Left-hander Jace Fry (sore left shoulder) went on the 10-day injured list retroactive to Saturday, clearing a place on Chicago’s 25-man roster.
Delmonico was batting just .206 with one home run and six RBIs in 21 games, but that home run was a three-run, walk-off shot on May 2 in a 6-4 victory over the Boston Red Sox. He was optioned back to Charlotte on May 20.
In his rookie season with the White Sox in 2017, Delmonico batted .262 with nine home runs and 23 RBIs in just 43 games. He had eight home runs and 25 RBIs last season while batting just .215 over 88 games.
