White Sox place starter Giolito on IL

The Chicago White Sox placed starting pitcher Lucas Giolito on the 10-day injured list with a strained left hamstring, the club announced Thursday.

Giolito, 24, suffered the injury Wednesday during the third inning of his outing against the Kansas City Royals. He had thrown 2 2/3 scoreless innings with five strikeouts to that point. Giolito is 2-1 with a 5.30 ERA and 23 strikeouts over four starts this season, his third with the White Sox.

The White Sox recalled outfielder Ryan Cordell and right-handed pitcher Carson Fulmer from Triple-A Charlotte. The White Sox optioned struggling outfielder Daniel Palka to Charlotte after Wednesday’s game.

Cordell, 27, is batting .323 with three doubles, a home run, six RBIs and six runs scored over seven games with Charlotte this season. He was 2-for-6 with a double and a home run in five games with the White Sox earlier this season.

Fulmer, 25, has gone 0-0 with a 1.29 ERA and 11 strikeouts over three relief appearances with the Knights. He was recalled by the White Sox on April 8 and allowed one run vs. Tampa Bay before being optioned back to Charlotte following the game.
