Vikings place franchise tag on S Harris

The Minnesota Vikings placed the franchise tag on safety Anthony Harris on Monday.

The franchise tag, worth $11.4 million, either secures Harris for next year or buys them time to work on a trade, according to a report by NBC Sports.

This is just the third time that the Vikings have used the franchise tag since it was introduced by the NFL in 1993. The first time was in 2003, when the team tagged tight end Jim Kleinsasser, and the second was linebacker Chad Greenway in 2011, according to a report by the Dailynoreseman.com.

Harris, 28, signed with the Vikings in 2015 as an undrafted free agent out Virginia. The 2019 season marked his first year as a full-time starter, and he tied for the NFL lead in interceptions, recording six during the regular season and one in the playoffs.

Also in 2019, he recorded 60 tackles (35 solo), one quarterback hit, one fumble recovery and one touchdown. For his career, Harris has played in 65 games (31 starts), and collected nine interceptions, 180 tackles (127 solo), four fumble recoveries and one forced fumble.

The Vikings opened up salary cap space by reaching an extension with quarterback Kirk Cousins earlier Monday.
