Texas Tech coach Wells tests positive for COVID-19

Second-year Texas Tech head coach Matt Wells tested positive for COVID-19 and will remain in Big 12 Conference testing protocol until the positive test is confirmed.

Wells will remain in isolation at home and perform coaching duties remotely. If the positive test is confirmed, he will not be on the sideline Saturday when the Red Raiders face Kansas in the team’s final scheduled game of the season.

“Texas Tech received notification earlier this morning that Coach Wells tested positive for COVID-19,” the school said in a statement. “At this time, Coach Wells has returned home to self-isolate and will continue his duties remotely leading into Saturday’s game against Kansas.”

Defensive coordinator Keith Patterson will take over head coaching duties Saturday if Wells is not able to attend the game.

Texas Tech is 3-6 this season and is coming off a 50-44 defeat at No. 23 Oklahoma State on Saturday. Wells is 7-14 in his two seasons at the helm for the Red Raiders.
