The Colorado Rockies have shut down left-hander Austin Gomber for the season so he can recover from a stress fracture in his lower back.
The Rockies initially placed Gomber on the 10-day injured list but have now moved him to the 60-day IL with a condition called pars defect, defined as a stress fracture of the bones of the lower spine, typically due to overuse.
“It’s going to keep him out for the rest of the season,” said manager Bud Black.
“He’ll be fine in a month or two. It won’t impact his offseason. It won’t impact next season.”
Gomber, 27, finishes 9-9 with a 4.53 ERA in 23 starts in his first season with the Rockies.
Right-hander Ryan Feltner was called up from Double-A Hartford to make his major league debut with a start on Sunday against the Atlanta Braves in Denver.
Feltner, 25, was a fourth-round draft pick by the Rockies in 2018 and is 8-3 with a 2.62 ERA over 20 starts at two separate minor league levels this season.
