Rockies INF Murphy on IL with fractured finger

The Colorado Rockies placed infielder Daniel Murphy on the 10-day injured list Monday with an avulsion fracture in his left index finger.

Murphy, who was playing first base, was injured when his hand jammed awkwardly into the dirt while fielding a ball in the fourth inning of Friday night’s 6-1 win against the Miami Marlins.

He remained in the game and collected a hit in the ninth inning — his first with the Rockies — but an X-ray on Saturday revealed the fracture. He was scheduled to visit a hand specialist on Monday.

Murphy, who celebrated his 34th birthday Monday, signed a two-year, $24 million contract with the Rockies in December. He is 1-for-10 for Colorado.

A three-time All-Star with the New York Mets (2014) and Washington Nationals (2016, 2017), Murphy is a .299 career hitter with 122 homers and 641 RBIs in 1,282 games.

In a corresponding move, Colorado recalled infielder Pat Valaika from Triple-A Albuquerque.

Valaika, 26, batted .286 in spring training with four homers and 13 RBIs in 21 games. He appeared in 68 games for the Rockies last season, batting .156 with two homers and five RBIs.
