Penn State redshirt freshman quarterback Michael Johnson Jr. has entered the transfer portal, two outlets reported Sunday.
First reported by 247Sports.com, Johnson was part of a crowded quarterbacks room and was expected to compete for third string with fellow redshirt freshman Ta’Quan Roberson. The 6-foot-2 Johnson was a four-star recruit out of Oregon and didn’t play a snap during his redshirt season.
Johnson and Roberson are behind starter Sean Clifford, who has two years of eligibility remaining, and Will Levis, a redshirt sophomore. Incoming freshman Micah Bowens also joins the mix.
Johnson was the 15th best dual-threat quarterback in the Class of 2019 and the No. 2 prospect in Oregon, according to 247Sports’ composite rankings.
ESPN also reported the move later Sunday.
