The Toronto Blue Jays agreed to trade infielder Eric Sogard to the Tampa Bay Rays on Sunday for a player to be named later, according to multiple reports.
The deal is pending completion of a physical for the 33-year-old Sogard, who was scratched from the Blue Jays’ lineup just before Sunday afternoon’s game against the visiting Rays.
Sogard is having the best year of his nine-year career, batting .300 with a career-high 10 homers and 30 RBIs in 73 games.
He has started games this season at second base, shortstop, third base, right field, left field and as the designated hitter.
Sogard is a career .247 hitter with 21 homers and 155 RBIs in 657 games with the Oakland Athletics (2010-15), Milwaukee Brewers (2017-18) and Blue Jays.
The Chicago Cubs and Atlanta Braves were also rumored to be interested in acquiring Sogard before the July 31 MLB trade deadline.
