The New York Giants fear starting quarterback Daniel Jones suffered a significant right knee injury — possibly a torn ACL — during his team’s 30-6 loss to the Raiders in Las Vegas, multiple outlets reported Sunday evening.
On the final play of the first quarter, Jones attempted to elude Raiders edge rusher Maxx Crosby when his right leg gave out and he crumpled to the ground. On the next play, Jones dropped back to pass and as he put pressure on his right leg, it gave out again and he fell to the turf, grabbing his right knee.
The NFL Network and ESPN cited sources saying the Giants fear the injury is a torn ACL, but that Jones will undergo an MRI exam on Monday to confirm the extent of the injury.
Speaking after the game, Giants head coach Brian Daboll explained why Jones went back in after collapsing the first time.
“He felt like (his knee) buckled, and then he was running it off,” Daboll said. “We went over to him, we talked to him, he said, ‘Nah, I’m good.’ Then, he went back in and he obviously wasn’t.”
Jones walked off the field and exited to be examined in the locker room before being ruled out just after halftime.
Tommy DeVito replaced Jones at quarterback but threw two interceptions in his first three pass attempts before settling down a bit and finishing with 175 yards passing with a touchdown and the two picks.
Jones was 4 of 9 for 25 yards before departing. Jones missed the previous three games due to a neck injury.
Normal Giants backup quarterback Tyrod Taylor is on injured reserve with a rib injury sustained during last week’s 13-10 overtime loss to the New York Jets.
