The Atlanta Falcons promoted quarterback Danny Etling from the practice squad, a sign that Matt Ryan’s sprained ankle won’t allow him to play on Sunday against the Seattle Seahawks, according to multiple reports.
Ryan and veteran Matt Schaub were the only quarterbacks on the roster, so the move suggests that Ryan will be inactive on Sunday. He officially is listed as questionable, and coach Dan Quinn said Friday that Ryan would be a game-time decision.
Still, the Falcons had a deadline of Saturday afternoon to activate Etling.
Ryan sprained his right ankle last Sunday in a loss to the Los Angeles Rams. The 2016 NFL Most Valuable Player, he has made 154 consecutive starts and hasn’t missed a game since December 2009.
The 25-year-old Etling, a seventh-round draft pick by the New England Patriots in 2018, has yet to appear in an NFL game.
