The Arizona Cardinals are bringing in running backs Jay Ajayi and Spencer Ware for workouts this week, according to multiple reports.
The Cardinals had one healthy running back Sunday — Chase Edmonds — as starter David Johnson took one carry and third-stringer D.J. Foster was out with a hamstring injury.
Ajayi’s two-day visit started Monday, according to NFL Network’s Ian Rapoport, who added that the workout “could result in a signing if all goes well.”
Ajayi, 26, suffered a torn right ACL last October in the Philadelphia Eagles’ loss to the Minnesota Vikings, ending his season after four games with 45 carries for 184 yards and three touchdowns.
Ajayi joined Philadelphia via trade from Miami midway through 2017 and helped the Eagles to the Super Bowl LII title that year. He reached the Pro Bowl with the Dolphins in 2016, rushing 260 times for 1,272 yards and eight touchdowns.
He has 2,516 rushing yards and 13 scores across 42 games through four seasons.
Ware, 27, is coming off ankle surgery that led to the Indianapolis Colts placing him on the reserve/physically unable to perform list in early August. He tweeted at the time that, “I am NOT done for season!” He was released last month.
Ware’s best year was with the Kansas City Chiefs in 2016, when he gained 1,368 yards from scrimmage and scored five touchdowns. He missed the 2017 season with a torn PCL and LCL in his right knee, suffered in a preseason game.
