Report: Netflix lands MLB Opening Day game

Netflix is continuing its foray into the live sports market and is gaining the rights to exclusively stream the MLB 2025 season opener, The Athletic reported Thursday.

The standalone opener features the New York Yankees and San Francisco Giants and is scheduled for March 25. The rest of the Opening Day slate will be played the following day.

This game is included in a three-year deal struck between Netflix and MLB. Netflix also will have the rights to stream events such as the Home Run Derby.

MLB declined to comment to The Athletic.

After ESPN opted out the final three years of its baseball deal, MLB reportedly divided games and events with Netflix and NBC/Peacock and also brought ESPN back into the fold with a modified package.

Contracts between television providers and streamers are expected to be announced soon.

All of the terms are expected to run three years to line up with the expiration of baseball packages with Fox and TNT Series ahead of the 2029 season.

Netflix’s live sports footprint has expanded in the past few years as it has added Christmas Day NFL games and WWE events to its schedule.
