If Alabama wins its second SEC title in three years this weekend, offensive coordinator Steve Sarkisian might have more than a celebration and preparations for the College Football Playoffs on his docket.
Sarkisian is expected to interview for Auburn’s head coaching position on Sunday, according to AL.com.
The Crimson Tide (10-0) head into the SEC championship game against Florida on Saturday with the No. 3 scoring offense in the nation (49.5 points per game). Alabama’s performance helped make Sarkisian a semifinalist for the 2020 Broyles Award, which honors college football’s top assistant coaches.
Sarkisian, who was in the mix for the Mississippi State and Colorado State jobs last offseason, previously served as head coach at USC (12-6) and Washington (34-29), where he led the Huskies to a bowl game four times. He returned to Alabama in January 2019 after two seasons as offensive coordinator for the Atlanta Falcons.
He’s reportedly tied with Auburn interim coach Kevin Steele as the country’s top-paid assistant ($2.5 million a year).
Auburn fired head coach Gus Malzahn last Sunday after a 6-4 regular season.
