Reds RHP Gray undergoes elbow surgery

Cincinnati Reds All-Star right-hander Sonny Gray underwent arthroscopic surgery on Wednesday to remove loose bodies from his pitching elbow, the team announced.

The minor procedure isn’t expected to affect Gray’s offseason routine. He is slated to be recovered well before the start of spring training.

Gray dealt with the elbow issue all season, but it didn’t prevent him from recording a career-best 205 strikeouts.

He made his final start on Tuesday against the Milwaukee Brewers and gave up three runs and three hits over five innings while taking the loss.

Gray, who turns 30 in November, went 11-8 with a solid 2.87 ERA in 31 starts for Cincinnati. His All-Star selection was the second of his career, the other coming in 2015 when he was a member of the Oakland Athletics.

Gray was acquired from the New York Yankees in the offseason. He first reached the majors in 2013 with Oakland and was dealt to New York during the 2018 campaign.

He is 70-60 with a 3.53 ERA in 186 career appearances (177 starts).
