Red Sox sign SS Bogaerts to six-year extension

The Boston Red Sox have signed shortstop Xander Bogaerts to a six-year extension covering the 2020-25 seasons, the team announced Monday.

The Red Sox did not disclose financial terms, but multiple outlets reported Bogaerts will earn the $12 million in 2019 he was already scheduled to make and $20 million in each of the next six years. There is also a vesting option for 2026 for another $20 million.

Bogaerts, 26, is in his seventh season with the Red Sox. He was an All-Star in 2016 and won World Series championships with Boston in 2013 and 2018.

Bogaerts batted .288 with a career-high 23 homers and 103 RBIs last season. Through four games this season, he is 3-for-16 with one homer, one RBI and six strikeouts.

The two-time Silver Slugger Award winner would have been a hot commodity on the free agent market next winter.
