The Boston Red Sox designated former first-round pick Blake Swihart for assignment Tuesday and recalled catcher Sandy Leon and right-hander Erasmo Ramirez from Triple-A Pawtucket, the team announced.
Swihart, primarily a catcher, was batting .231 with one homer and four RBIs in 12 games this season. The 27-year-old also saw playing time at first base and left field.
Swihart, selected 26th overall in the 2011 draft, batted .256 with nine homers and 58 RBIs in 202 games over parts of five seasons for Boston.
Leon, 30, is batting .226 with 20 homers and 104 RBIs over parts of seven major league seasons. He spent three seasons with the Washington Nationals (2012-14) before playing the last four for Boston.
Leon batted just .177 with five homers and 22 RBIs for the Red Sox last season. He was batting .120 in seven games at Triple-A Pawtucket this season.
Ramirez, 28, is 32-39 with a 4.36 ERA in 192 appearances (92 starts) with the Seattle Mariners (2012-14, 2017-18) and Tampa Bay Rays (2015-17). He was a non-roster invitee to spring training with Boston and was 1-0 with a 1.13 ERA in two starts for Pawtucket this season.
