Tampa Bay Rays pitching prospect Tyler Zombro is recovering at home in Durham, N.C., a week after he was hit in the head by a line drive.
He was released from Duke University Hospital on Wednesday and will continue with outpatient occupational and speech therapy, the Rays said.
“The Rays extend their gratitude to the doctors, nurses and staff caring for Tyler, and continue to be overwhelmed by the support for his recovery,” the Rays said.
Several members of the Rays appeared in a video wishing Zombro well, sending prayers for a speedy recovery.
Pitching for the Triple-A Durham Bulls on June 3, Zombro, 26, entered the game in the eighth inning against the Norfolk Tides and faced Brett Cumberland, who lined a 1-2 fastball off the side of the pitcher’s head. He was taken from the field on a stretcher.
Zombro has a 1-1 record with a 3.18 ERA in nine relief outings this season. He has an 11-4 record with a 2.79 ERA in 97 games (three starts) since joining the Rays’ organization in 2017.
A Virginia native, he played collegiately at George Mason.
