The Texas Rangers placed right-handers Kyle Gibson and Hunter Wood on the 10-day injured list Tuesday in advance of their series opener on the road against the Los Angeles Angels.
In a pair of corresponding moves, left-hander Wes Benjamin and right-hander Demarcus Evans were recalled from Triple-A Round Rock.
Gibson, who has a right groin strain, is on the IL retroactive to May 22. At 3-0 with a 2.24 ERA, he has been the Rangers’ best starting pitcher, recovering from a rough season debut to fashion a 1.50 ERA over his last nine starts.
According to the Dallas Morning News, Gibson might just miss two starts before he returns.
Gibson, 33, is 72-74 in 215 career appearances (210 starts) in nine seasons with the Minnesota Twins and Rangers.
Wood, 27, is expected to be out even longer with right elbow discomfort. He has a 3.60 ERA in five relief appearances this season and is 2-2 in his career over 71 appearances (10 starts) in four seasons with the Tampa Bay Rays, Cleveland Indians and Rangers.
Benjamin, 27, made four appearances (one start) with the Rangers earlier this season, going 0-2 with a 7.36 ERA. He is 2-3 with a 5.46 ERA in 12 appearances over the last two seasons with Texas.
Evans, 24, has not appeared in a major league game this season after making his debut in 2020. He had a 2.25 ERA in four appearances last season.
