The Pittsburgh Pirates recalled infielder Ke’Bryan Hayes from his rehab assignment at Triple-A Indianapolis and reinstated him from the 60-day injured list as the Pirates began a seven-game homestand Thursday.
Hayes was in Thursday’s starting lineup against the Miami Marlins, hitting second and playing third base.
The team also optioned right-hander Wil Crowe to Indianapolis.
Pirates manager Derek Shelton had said Wednesday that was the plan with Hayes.
“We came into the year knowing he was going to be a big part of our year on both sides of the ball, and for him to only play one game, it’s been challenging for us,” Shelton said. “So we’re excited to get him back.”
The Pirates chose Hayes in the first round (No. 32 overall) during the 2015 draft.
Hayes, 24, played Opening Day, hitting a home run in his first plate appearance, and then lasted two innings in the team’s second game of the season before injuring his left wrist.
Hayes produced a big September last season — a slash line of .376/.442/.682 with five home runs in 24 games — en route to winning the NL Rookie of the Month award.
The Pirates also reinstated right-hander JT Brubaker from the bereavement list and placed him on the COVID-IL (intake process).
