Pirates RHP Taillon placed on 10-day IL

The Pittsburgh Pirates announced on Saturday they have placed right-handed pitcher Jameson Taillon on the 10-day injured list with a right elbow flexor tendon strain.

Taillon, in his fourth season with the Pirates, has compiled a 2-3 record with a 4.10 ERA and 30 strikeouts in 37 1/3 innings over seven starts in 2019. He earned a victory Wednesday in his last appearance, allowing three earned runs in 6 1/3 innings as the Pirates beat the Texas Rangers 7-5.

The Pirates also recalled infielder Kevin Newman (right middle finger laceration) from his rehab assignment with Triple-A Indianapolis and reinstated him from the 10-day IL. Newman hit .233 (7-for-30) with two doubles and an RBI in eight games on rehab with Indianapolis. He made four starts at shortstop, two starts in left field and two starts in center field.

To make room for Newman on the 25-man active roster, infielder-outfielder Pablo Reyes was optioned to Triple-A. Reyes was hitting .128 in 39 at-bats for the Pirates.

The Pirates also announced they intend to select the contract of left-handed pitcher Tyler Lyons from Indianapolis. Lyons, who attended spring training as a nonroster invitee, went 1-0 with a 3.18 ERA and 12 strikeouts in 10 relief appearances this season with Indianapolis.

He played six seasons with the St. Louis Cardinals (2013-18), compiling a 12-10 record with a 4.09 ERA over 147 appearances (20 starts).

The Pirates will make a corresponding 40-man roster move when the Lyons transaction becomes official.
