Philadelphia Phillies right-hander David Robertson was instructed Monday not to throw for three weeks in an attempt to give the flexor strain in his right elbow more time to heal.
The order not to throw came during a second opinion with noted orthopedic surgeon Dr. James Andrews. Robertson last pitched on April 14 and is expected to miss at least one more month if not longer.
“David feels more comfortable after this most recent diagnosis and feels more confident,” Phillies manager Gabe Kapler said before Monday’s game against the Milwaukee Brewers. “It was a good news visit from our perspective.”
Robertson is slated to begin a throwing program after the three-week shutdown.
The 34-year-old Robertson was 0-1 with a 5.40 ERA in seven appearances before being shut down.
Overall, he is 53-33 with a 2.90 ERA and 137 saves in 12 seasons with the New York Yankees (2008-14, 2017-18), Chicago White Sox (2015-17) and Phillies.
Philadelphia also placed right-hander Edubray Ramos (shoulder) on the 10-day injured list and recalled left-hander Austin Davis from Triple-A Lehigh Valley.
Ramos, 26, has a 4.66 ERA in 12 appearances this season. Davis pitched two scoreless innings in his lone outing for the Phillies this season and was 1-0 with a 1.13 ERA in 11 appearances at Lehigh Valley.
