San Diego Padres starter Jake Arrieta exited Sunday’s game in St. Louis with an apparent injury after retiring just one of the six Cardinals batters he faced in the first inning.
The 35-year-old right-hander allowed five runs (four earned) on three hits and a walk. He threw only nine of his 20 pitches for strikes.
Arrieta walked off with a trainer after allowing an RBI double to Edmundo Sosa that put St. Louis ahead 3-0.
Including Sunday’s abbreviated outing, Arrieta has given up 16 runs (15 earned) in 12 1/3 innings over four starts with the Padres since signing as a free agent on Aug. 16.
Arrieta, the 2015 National League Cy Young Award winner, was released by the Chicago Cubs on Aug. 12 after going 5-11 with a 6.88 ERA in 20 starts this season.
