Extended protective netting will be in place at Oriole Park at Camden Yards by Sept. 5, when the Orioles return to Baltimore.
The team committed to making the move earlier this season.
“Crews are extending protective netting at the same height of the existing backstop netting down each foul line to near each foul pole,” the team said in a statement. “The Orioles and the Maryland Stadium Authority … researched all available options and performed due diligence to determine that this is the best and safest option for Oriole Park.”
The Orioles will meet the Texas Rangers on Sept. 5.
In addition, the team announced the protective netting will be extended to near the foul poles at their spring training home, Ed Smith Stadium in Sarasota, Fla.
The Orioles join several teams, including the Toronto Blue Jays, Chicago White Sox, Washington Nationals, Texas Rangers, Houston Astros and Los Angeles Dodgers, as those that already have extended their netting or announced plans to do so.
In May, a 2-year-old girl who was hit by a foul ball at Houston’s Minute Maid Park suffered a skull fracture, bleeding, brain contusions and brain edema, according to the Houston Chronicle.
Earlier this month, a woman was taken to the hospital after being hit by a ball at Globe Life Park in Arlington, Texas.
In August 2018, a 79-year-old woman died as an effect of being hit in the head by a batted ball at Dodger Stadium.
