No. 3 QB could get call for Stanford vs. UCLA

Stanford might be down to its third-string quarterback when it hosts UCLA on Thursday night.

Coach David Shaw has ruled out starter K.J. Costello, who will miss his third consecutive game (and fourth overall) because of a thumb injury. Costello’s replacement, Davis Mills, is nursing a calf injury that sent him to the sideline in the fourth quarter of Stanford’s most recent game, a 23-13 victory over then-No. 15 Washington on Oct. 5.

Mills’ availability for this week is somewhere “between doubtful and questionable,” Shaw told reporters after practice Monday.

If Mills can’t go, the job falls to redshirt freshman Jack West, who replaced Mills late against Washington but has not attempted a pass this season. He completed 1 of 5 passes in two games last season.

UCLA (1-5, 1-2 Pac-12) also has an uncertain quarterback situation as it heads to Stanford (3-3, 2-2). The status of Dorian Thompson-Robinson is up in the air after he missed the team’s Oct. 5 home loss to Oregon State because of an ankle injury. Austin Burton would be in line to make his second start.
