The Washington Nationals on Thursday placed left-hander MacKenzie Gore on the bereavement list and called up rookie left-hander Joe La Sorsa from Triple-A Rochester in a corresponding move.
In his first season with the Nationals, the 24-year-old Gore is 7-10 with a 4.28 ERA, 147 strikeouts and 55 walks in 132 1/3 innings over 26 starts.
La Sorsa, 25, is 1-0 with a 6.61 ERA in 16 1/3 innings over 15 appearances this season with Washington. He has struck out 17 and walked four.
The Nationals had picked up La Sorsa off waivers on June 8 from the Tampa Bay Rays, for whom he had a 2.08 ERA in 4 1/3 innings over two appearances this season.
In another move, outfielder Lane Thomas was scratched from the lineup for Thursday night’s home game against the Miami Marlins with back tightness.
Thomas, 28, left Wednesday’s game against the host Toronto Blue Jays in the seventh inning because of back discomfort. He went 0-for-3 in the Nats’ 7-0 loss and 0-for-9 in the three-game series.
Thomas is hitting .279 with a career-high 20 homers, 17 stolen bases and 69 RBIs in 132 games this season.
