Mississippi State lands Alabama WR transfer Shavers

New Mississippi State coach Mike Leach has brought in a fifth graduate transfer, adding former Alabama wide receiver Tyrell Shavers for the 2020 season.

Shavers entered the NCAA transfer portal on June 2. He announced his commitment to the Bulldogs on Monday night on Twitter.

Shavers was one of two Alabama wide receivers to announce their departure from the program. Redshirt junior Chadarius Townsend officially entered the transfer portal on Tuesday. As a third-year sophomore, he was largely used on special teams and lined up some at running back.

Jerry Jeudy and Henry Ruggs III are gone from the Alabama receiving corps after being selected in the first round of the 2020 NFL Draft, though Devonta Smith returned for his senior season. Jaylen Waddle, a potential first-round pick in 2021, is expected to take on a bigger role as a junior.

Shavers can play immediately at Mississippi State and has two seasons of eligibility remaining.

Alabama signed Shavers to the Class of 2017 as a four-star recruit from Lewisville, Texas. The 247Sports composite listed him as the No. 12 wide receiver in the class.

The 6-foot-6 Shavers redshirted in 2017, and in the following two seasons, he played in 28 games, primarily on special teams. Last season, he rushed once for 14 yards and caught one pass for 20 yards.

The Bulldogs also have added Shavers’ Alabama teammate, offensive lineman Scott Lashley, as well as quarterback K.J. Costello (Stanford), wide receiver Jay Banks Jr. (Louisville) and kicker Brandon Ruiz (Arizona State).
