New York Mets All-Star Jeff McNeil avoided serious injury when he was hit by a pitch during Sunday’s game against Pittsburgh.
Leading off the bottom of the first inning against Pirates right-hander Chris Archer, McNeil was struck in the right shin. He scored when Michael Conforto followed with a home run, but later was removed from the game.
X-rays confirmed there was no serious damage and the 27-year-old infielder/outfielder was diagnosed with a bruised shin, according to MLB.com.
There is no timetable for his return, but the Mets have a scheduled day off Monday before beginning a three-game road series against the Chicago White Sox.
McNeil entered Sunday’s game batting .336 (second in the National League) with 10 homers, 27 doubles and 44 RBIs in 90 games.
