Maryland QB Tagovailoa out for ‘medical reasons’

Maryland quarterback Taulia Tagovailoa and three other players missed Saturday’s game against Rutgers due to “medical reasons,” a team spokesman told the Washington Post.

Tagovailoa, defensive back Jakorian Bennett and linebackers Ruben Hyppolite II and Chance Campbell were ruled out for the game.

Multiple outlets reported the absences were due to positive COVID-19 tests.

Defensive coordinator Jon Hoke was also absent after a positive test, according to 247 Sports.

Lance LeGendre started at quarterback for the Terrapins against the visiting Scarlet Knights in College Park, Md.

Tagovailoa has started four games for Maryland this season, completing 61.5 percent of his passes for 1,011 yards with seven touchdowns and seven interceptions. He has also rushed for 44 yards and two scores.

He is the younger brother of Miami Dolphins rookie quarterback Tua Tagovailoa, the No. 5 overall pick in the 2020 NFL Draft.
