The Seattle Mariners demoted slumping center fielder Mallex Smith to Triple-A Tacoma on Tuesday and recalled outfielder Braden Bishop.
Smith is batting just .165 with one homer and five RBIs in 97 at-bats, and last got a hit on April 18. He is just 3-for-46 over his last 15 games.
Smith, who turns 26 on Monday, was acquired from the Tampa Bay Rays in the offseason as part of the package in which catcher Mike Zunino and outfielder Guillermo Heredia were dealt by the Mariners.
Overall, he has a .266 career average with eight homers, 79 RBIs and 80 steals with the Atlanta Braves (2016), Rays (2017-18) and Mariners.
Bishop made his major league debut with Seattle on March 21, when he was hitless in one at-bat against the Oakland Athletics at Tokyo.
The 25-year-old is batting .267 with three homers and 13 RBIs in 21 games at Tacoma.
Bishop was a third-round draft selection by the Mariners in 2015.
