Major League Baseball handed Seattle Mariners outfielder Keon Broxton a two-game suspension and an undisclosed fine after one of the batting gloves he tossed hit umpire Manny Gonzalez in Monday night’s home game against the New York Yankees.
Broxton will appeal the suspension that was announced Tuesday by Joe Torre, the chief baseball officer for Major League Baseball.
Broxton was ejected from Monday’s game in Seattle after he struck out on a 3-2 pitch to end the second inning. He flipped his bat and tossed his helmet while walking away, then one of his two batting gloves struck the home plate umpire in the face.
Broxton, who is batting .176 with six home runs and 16 RBIs in 90 games this season, was immediately tossed from the game, the first ejection of his career. The Mariners lost the game 5-4.
The Mariners claimed Broxton, 29, off waivers in late July after he was designated for assignment by the Baltimore Orioles.
