Alabama junior linebacker Dylan Moses’ lawyer — who also is his father — said the player’s return to the Crimson Tide in 2020 isn’t a sure thing.
In a bizarre statement on legal letterhead from the Moses Law Firm, posted on Dylan Moses’ verified Instagram account on Thursday, Edward Moses III said his son spoke too fast when he announced his return to the program.
“We are aware that Mr. Moses has recently given an unadvised commitment to return to the University of Alabama,” the statement read, in part. “However, under the provision of the trust, his majesty is not allowed make unilateral decisions.”
Moses missed the 2019 season with a torn ACL suffered in August.
According to the statement, Moses took out a loss of value insurance policy in the spring, before the injury. The statement said the policy was with Lords of London, although it presumably was referring to insurer Lloyd’s of London.
“We are currently investigating his loss of value claim. And we are in negotiations with the University of Alabama for his return to the team, so we have advised Mr. Moses to maintain his preliminary decision to return but make his final decision on January 20.”
The deadline for underclassmen to declare for the draft actually is Jan. 17.
Moses posted Monday on his Instagram account a statement that read, in part, “After much thought and prayer, my family and I have decided that the best decision is for me to return to Alabama and finish my college education. Football is not who I am, it is what I do. Life after football is what I’m most concerned about, and I want to ensure I can put myself in the best possible position to succeed in life, fulfill my goals and make my dreams come true. …
“The 2020 season will be very personal to me, and I want nothing more than to finish my Alabama career in style. This program’s goal is to compete for championships and next year will be no different. Next season isn’t about draft stock or money — it’s about grinding with my brothers and winning another national title.”
Moses, a preseason All-American after ranking as a Butkus Award finalist in 2018, has been rated as a potential second- or third-round pick in the upcoming NFL draft, NFL scouts told AL.com.
