Jurickson Profar exercises option to return to Padres

Jurickson Profar will remain in San Diego at least one more season after he elected Wednesday to activate the first of two options in the three-year deal he signed with the Padres in advance of the 2021 season.

Profar, 28, batted .227 with four home runs and 33 RBIs in 137 games for the Padres this past season. He played 81 games in the outfield, playing in at least 20 games in each of the three outfield positions.

Traded from the Oakland Athletics to the Padres after the 2019 season, Profar signed a deal with the Padres in January that had player options in 2022 and 2023. He will make $6.5 million next season, plus $1.5 million in signing-bonus money, instead of taking a $1 million buyout to become a free agent.

In eight major-league seasons, five of them with the Texas Rangers, Profar is a career .236 hitter with 63 home runs and 255 RBIs in 684 games. The majority of his games (218) have come as a second baseman. He also is 7-for-20 in eight career postseason games.
