Jacksonville quarterback Gardner Minshew will miss Sunday’s game against Houston with a thumb injury, Jaguars coach Doug Marrone confirmed Monday.
Marrone said rookie Jake Luton will work with the starters in practice this week, not veteran backup Mike Glennon.
Luton, a sixth-round pick from Oregon State, could make his NFL debut when Jacksonville (1-6) hosts the AFC South rival Texans (1-6). The Jaguars have lost six straight, including a 30-14 loss in Houston in Week 5. Both teams are coming off bye weeks.
Luton, 24, passed for 2,714 yards with 28 touchdowns and three interceptions in 11 games for the Beavers in 2019.
Glennon, 30, signed with Jacksonville in May. He is 6-16 as an NFL starter with the Tampa Bay Buccaneers (2013-14) and Chicago Bears (2017). He has appeared in 29 games with the Bucs, Bears, Arizona Cardinals and then-Oakland Raiders, completing 60.9 percent of his passes for 5,163 yards with 36 touchdowns and 20 picks.
Minshew, 25, reportedly has multiple fractures and a strained ligament in his throwing thumb. He has started every game this season, throwing for 1,855 yards and 13 touchdowns against five interceptions. He has completed 65.9 percent of his passes.
