Cornhuskers looking for more than moral victories

Nebraska hung with College Football Playoff hopeful Ohio State for as long as it could last week. The Cornhuskers lost 36-31, but the competitive game, in Columbus, showed that first-year coach Scott Frost is on the right path.

After Saturday’s game, Buckeyes head coach Urban Meyer described the Cornhuskers as the two-win team that nobody wants to see on their schedule late in the season.

“I suppose that’s good to hear. It’s not much of a consolation,” Frost said. “We’ve had some great moral victories and those don’t count for anything.”

Nebraska (2-7, 1-5 Big Ten) will have a more manageable opponent this Saturday as it faces Illinois (4-5, 2-4 Big Ten).

“You can only get so much better without getting the result you want,” Nebraska running back Devine Ozigbo said. “So we’re just going to keep working and keep getting better. Definitely wins are the next step for this team. If it’s not now, it’s definitely going to be in the future. This team is just going to continue to get better.”

Even as true freshman quarterback Adrian Martinez garners more and more attention, Ozigbo has been one of the bright spots. Against Ohio State, Ozigbo tallied 86 yards and a touchdown on 20 carries.

The senior from Sachse, Texas, has racked up 796 yards and nine scores this season, well within reach of getting to the 1,000-yard mark.

“It’s kind of something that came up as the season has gone along. Now getting close and being able to reach it, that’s something I definitely want to go out there and grab for a personal goal,” Ozigbo said.

“But I definitely just want to do something for the team and especially for the fans. It’s something they’ve been talking about for a few years now and it would be good to give it to them.”
