Offense clicks as Nebraska heads into make-up game
Finally, the narrative of the Nebraska Cornhuskers’ 2018 campaign includes a chapter about a victory. Nebraska (1-6, 1-4 Big Ten) defeated Minnesota 53-28 last week in dominating fashion.
It seemed like it was just going to be a matter of time before the Cornhuskers’ offense was firing on all cylinders, and it did so against the Gophers. True freshman quarterback Adrian Martinez was 25-of-29 passing for 276 yards and three touchdowns, and three different Huskers rushed for more than 100 yards.
“I felt like I did my job. That’s all that’s really asked of me,” Martinez said. “I was efficient out there, helped distribute the ball. Everyone was doing their job and obviously that’s what resulted in such a big offensive game for us.”
That kind of offense is what was expected — or at least hoped for — in the first season under head coach Scott Frost.
“We’re just starting to execute at a better rate. I’ve been saying we’ve been getting better I think that showed up on the field,” Frost said. “We’ve just come short of a couple wins, but the offense is starting to understand the system.
“The last couple weeks they just go out and run through it like they’ve been practicing those things for two weeks, and that’s when you know guys are starting to understand the scheme, understand their individual roles within the scheme and how to make something work.”
Now the Cornhuskers take a reprieve from Big Ten play as they host Bethune-Cookman (4-4) this week — a matchup added to the schedule in mid-September after their Week 1 tilt with Akron was canceled due to thunderstorms.
“Well our first priority is going to be getting ready to play and try to win the game. This is a team that’s 4-4, that’s a better record than what we have so we’re going to do everything we can to prepare them,” Frost said.
